BackPacks for Kids

17th Annual BackPacks for Kids Day A Great Success!!

Since 1999 the Samaritan Community Center has provided thousands of free backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies to area children, going into grades K-12, in late summer before the start of the new school year.

“We have teachers who have shared stories about children who were two to three weeks into the school year before it was known that they didn’t have access to needed supplies,” says Shannon Green, BackPacks for Kids Day Coordinator. “We believe it is critically important for children to be fully prepared that very first day of school. It helps them have a positive start to their learning experience.”

Thank you to all the amazing groups, individuals who made BackPacks for Kids Day 2016 a wonderful success!

And a special thanks to the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program. Their grant allowed us to purchase and distribute 2400 backpacks, and to also partner with Project Self Esteem of Carroll County and provide that organization with 600 backpacks to give to needy school children in their county.

Day of Fun & Fellowship

BackPacks for Kids Day has become an exciting community back-to-school event but it would not be possible without support from more than 500 businesses, churches, vendors, and individual community volunteers that come together to collect and inventory school supplies.

BP Supply Sponsors Thank YouEach year a focal point in that collection process is the annual school supply drive, co-sponsored by KLRC-FM and Northwest Arkansas Chick-fil-A restaurants. This year’s drive was held July 15-16, and over $3000 in supplies were gathered at all NWA Chick-fil-A restaurants during the two-day event.

This year’s BackPacks for Kids Day was held Saturday August 6 and even though rain drove all activities indoors, SCC still distributed over 3000 backpacks. Those not picked-up on BackPacks day were distributed to schools for needy children who come to school without any supplies. In addition to free backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies, kids at all locations received free haircuts or vouchers for free haircuts, free lunch and drinks, and were treated to numerous fun activity booths hosted by local churches, Walmart vendors and local businesses.
